The Adhesive Bonding Technology and Surfaces division at the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials IFAM has more than 350 employees and is the largest independent research group in Europe working in the area of industrial adhesive bonding technology. Adhesive bonding and surface technology are the focus of our R&D work, with our aim being to provide industry with application-oriented system solutions.
Our activities range from fundamental research through to production and the market introduction of new products. The industrial sectors we serve include the transport industry, machine and plant construction, energy technology, medical technology, the maritime sector, the packaging industry, and the electrical industry.
The development of polymers and polymer formulations and the relevant reactions are the focus of our work in this area. This also covers the processing of polymers and the manufacture and characterization of polymer-based components. Of particular interest is the experimental measurement and computer simulation of aging processes, including prediction of the service life of materials and components. Certified training courses in fiber composites complete the portfolio.
Adhesive bonding value creation chains
Adhesive bonding technology, a core area of expertise, involves the development and characterization of adhesives, the design and simulation of bonded, riveted, and hybrid joints as well as the characterization, testing, and qualification of such joints. Surface technology – customized surface modification
The surface technology field covers physical and chemical cleaning, the activation and modification of surfaces, and the coating of surfaces. This enables the industrial use of many materials to be expanded considerably. The R&D work includes early identification of degradation phenomena, the validation of aging tests, and inline quality control of surface properties.

Process automation in assembly
The automation and digitalization of processes that constantly adapt with high precision to changing components, changing production procedures, and human tasks are another core area of expertise. The particular focus is on assembly processes involving large structures on a 1:1 scale. Innovative data acquisition, the evaluation and visualization of such data, and the use of intelligent materials enable holistic quality assurance of materials, composites, and coatings.
Certified and accredited in accordance with industry standards
The entire division Adhesive Bonding Technology and Surfaces is certified in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9001. The laboratories for material testing, corrosion testing, and paint/lacquer technology are also accredited in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025 for specific test methods. The Training Center for Adhesive Bonding Technology is well recognized internationally; it is accredited via DVS-PersZert® in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17024. The Training Center for Fiber Composite Technology meets the quality requirements of DIN EN ISO/IEC 17024.
