Electric drives ─ safe and reliable

Both in the industry and in the private setting electric drives have become indispensable. Their reliability and the high levels of achievable efficiency make them significant for use in industrial machines and facilities. Similarly, they play a decisive role in guaranteeing the energy supply, in relation to both conventional power plants and renewable energy sources.

New solutions for electric drives are being employed in the field of hybrid and electric vehicles. In all fields of application, including automobile technology or agricultural machinery technology, electric drives are facing such challenges as the need to increase energy efficiency, performance, torque and reliability while reducing costs.

With its interdisciplinary team, the Electric Drive Systems Department at Fraunhofer IFAM therefore focuses on the entire development chain, from the concept to the manufacture and testing of prototype drives. Unique hereby is the close connection with production technologies suitable for large series, such as casting technology.

Essential fields of research are:

  • Design and development of compact electric drives with high torque and performance densities
  • Development of new manufacturing technologies for electric drives, such as cast coils
  • Hardware and software development for control units, including for drive control with optimum efficiency as well as for the vehicle control system
  • Construction and testing of prototypes and functional samples, e.g. wheel hub drives
