Customized cleaning, activation, and functionalization

 

The surfaces of most everyday products are vitally important. Atmospheric pressure (AP) plasmas are able to clean and activate plastics and metals in an economical and environmentally friendly way. Thereafter, for example, water-based coatings and harmless adhesives can be applied to any desired substrate materials.  

In the recent years the experts of Plasma Technology and Surfaces PLATO at Fraunhofer IFAM have transferred AP plasma technologies for the deposition of plasma coatings to industrial production in close collaboration with their customers. The resulting nano-layers are used e. g. as adhesion promotion, corrosion protection, electrical insulation or as permanent, hydrophobic release layers.

The AP plasma processes and the resulting coatings are tested, adapted, and qualified to ensure customer requirements are met and where necessary parameters are modified.

The processes can be readily integrated into production lines and automated. Fraunhofer IFAM scientists were awarded the Joseph von Fraunhofer Prize 2012 for the development of these innovative coatings and plasma processes.
