Application-oriented research for key industries

Fraunhofer IFAM carries out research and development with the aim of bringing innovations into application. Due to the institute's competence portfolio, the focus is particularly on the automotive, energy, aerospace, maritime technologies, medical technology and life sciences sectors. Our products, technologies and research services thus address in particular sectors of high importance for the future viability of Germany and Europe as an industrial location.

With over 700 employees, Fraunhofer IFAM stands for application-oriented research at the highest level. The scientists carry out research and development in the two areas of "Shaping and Functional Materials" and "Adhesive Bonding Technology and Surfaces". These two areas result in cross-system core competencies and a range of services extending from materials, shaping and joining technology to the functionalization of surfaces. The development of complete components or complex systems as well as digital processes is also part of our portfolio.

Fraunhofer IFAM covers the entire value chain from material development and product design to integration into industrial production - including pilot production and targeted measures for personnel qualification in new technologies. With these services, the institute addresses not only industrial sectors but also the automotive, energy, aviation, maritime technologies, medical technology, and life sciences industries in particular.

Mobility

With its comprehensive systems understanding of the automotive industry, Fraunhofer IFAM addresses technologies and solutions for the entire value chain. The focus is on new manufacturing processes, lightweight materials, joining processes (including material mixes), electrification and hybridization, as well as battery, fuel cell, and mobility concepts.

Aviation

Fraunhofer IFAM develops and researches innovative technologies, materials, and manufacturing processes for a quiet, sustainable, efficient, and yet economically competitive aviation of tomorrow.

Energy

Energy system analysis and materials and process research serve as the basis for renewable energy, batteries, thermal energy storage, hydrogen economy, materials or energy efficiency and circular economy.

Maritime Technologies

In order to strengthen the maritime sector as one of the most important German industries, Fraunhofer IFAM combines the competencies of surface protection, functional surfaces, adhesive manufacturing, lightweight construction, and electric drives.

Medical Technology and Life Sciences

For innovative materials, efficient manufacturing processes, and safe medical products, Fraunhofer IFAM translationally combines materials and life sciences.
