Special plasma coatings for components and products are required in a range of industries – from car production to the plastics industry and the biotechnology sector. Plasma coatings allow the range of properties of products and semi-finished products to be enhanced, virtually regardless of the materials involved.

Using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) and physical gas phase deposition (PVD), new application-specific surface properties can be created without significantly changing the geometry of the component. The thickness of such plasma coatings is typically between 10 nanometers and 1 micrometer.

Experts in the Plasma Technology and Surfaces PLATO department at Fraunhofer IFAM develop tailored functional layers in close collaboration with their customers. Many such coatings have already been implemented in production plants in a variety of industries.
