Resonance-Frequency-Damping Analysis (RFDA)

RFDA System

Measurement Procedure

  • non-destructive test method
  • measurement of the resonance frequency and its decay behaviour after a short mechanical impulse
  • determination of elasticity and shear modulus, the lateral contraction number and damping

Damping and Modulus of Elasticity

  • cuboid: length ≠ width ≠ height
  • 40mm ≤ length ≤ 200 mm
  • length ≥ 2 × width
  • side surfaces right-angled and flat (for compact material: milled or ground)

Shear Modulus and Transverse Contraction Number

  • same as for damping and modulus of elasticity, but additionally:
  • 60 mm ≤ length ≤ 200 mm
  • 30 mm ≤ width ≤ 100 mm
  • height ≤ 0,5 × width

The best results are obtained for samples whose dimensions are in the middle of the tolerance range, e.g. 100×50×7 mm³. Other geometries are possible under certain circumstances (individual case examination).
