The reaction of gaseous H₂ and a metal alloy forming a metal hydride (including the back-reaction) can be employed for various technical applications:

• Electrochemical applications (e.g. battery electrodes)
• Electronic applications (e.g. sensors)
• Optical applications (e.g. switchable mirrors)
