The maritime industry is one of the most important sectors in Germany. The Maritime Technologies business segment brings together Fraunhofer IFAM expertise in anti-corrosion and anti-fouling coatings, functional surfaces, adhesive bonding technology, and lightweight structures. The development processes are facilitated by advanced analytical methods and technical quality assurance along the whole production chain.
The electrification of marine propulsion systems and electrical energy storage systems for above water and underwater applications are further objectives of Fraunhofer IFAM’s development work. In addition, Industry 4.0 and advancements in digitization are opening up new opportunities in this sector.
Offshore test facilities
Besides conventional development activities in a technical center, the maritime industry needs test facilities for new technologies that mimic real environmental conditions. Fraunhofer IFAM and its staff operate outdoor test stands in List on Sylt, at the Alte Weser Lighthouse, and on the island of Helgoland in the North Sea. These stands enable in total several hundred samples of anti-corrosion and anti-fouling coatings to be tested in the immersed zone, tidal zone, and spray zone as well as on land. These facilities are used for publicly funded research projects and for work commissioned by customers.
The core competencies of Fraunhofer IFAM mean that it is in an ideal position to offer the maritime industry a wide range of services for the development and qualification of materials and production processes:
