Paints and coatings play an important role in a large number of industrial products. The color, texture, and haptic properties, all of which are surface properties, are often key features for making a decision to buy a product, for example a car. The thin coating – typically having the thickness of not much more than a human hair – protects the product against corrosion, biological growth, contamination, wear, UV light, and other influences. This considerably prolongs the product service life and functionality.
Paints and coatings are high-tech products that are continuously being further advanced and optimized. The focus is on cost reduction, prolonging the service life of coatings, and the integration of new functionalities and quality assurance measures. This includes, for example, the qualification of materials and processes, the development of test methods, and the training of personnel.
The Paint/Lacquer Technology experts at Fraunhofer IFAM – comprising technicians, engineers, and scientists – tackle all these aspects in both industrial and publicly funded projects.
