First and foremost, the business area provides competent support in the development of energy and process engineering components and systems for variable applications and in multiple size scales.

The offer is aimed in particular at partners in industry or research who are interested in providing materials science and thermodynamic know-how "from one hand".

Representative of the variety of topics dealt with in the business area, the following should be mentioned here: the thermal and fluidic design of individual components or complete technical systems, such as, for example, the heat and flow technology of a plant, e.g.

• efficient compact heat exchangers mainly for use in gases and evaporating fluids,
• latent and sorptive thermal storage components with high capacity and power density and their storage materials,
• high-performance temperature control systems for tools (for thermal shaping or for the thermal management of heat-generating electrical or electronic components),

the selection of ideal material systems for thermal engineering applications and the interaction with the corresponding specialists, the characterization and mathematical description of thermal and fluid mechanical material properties and the metrological validation of individual components or prototypical systems.

Core Competencies

Competencies in the development of latent high-performance heat accumulators based on cellular metals; left clockwise: from the accumulator material (paraffin) via the porous hollow metal sphere as a capsule, finally filled and sealed, cross-linked at the bottom for numerical simulation and finally as a thermographic image of the finished component

Our core competencies in the fields of heat transport, heat storage and heat management include

• the calculation of (in)steady state temperature fields in multi-dimensional bodies with (an)isotropic properties,
• the modeling of mass, momentum and heat transport in different geometries under variable boundary conditions (also with phase change),
• the measurement and/or calculation of thermal state and transport parameters of (composite) materials (thermal conductivity and heat capacity), as well as
• the experimental determination of thermal and flow parameters such as heat transfer coefficients and pressure loss coefficients

The Energy and Thermal Management business area covers the entire range of services from thermal and fluidic design and the selection and characterization of optimal material systems to the development, production and experimental validation of prototype components and systems.
